UK travel companies are gearing up for a surge in holiday bookings, with a projected 5% increase in package holiday reservations this January. The Civil Aviation Authority predicts a significant rise in travelers, estimating 200,000 more bookings compared to the same period last year, when 4.3 million people booked trips. January is a popular month for holiday planning, offering a post-Christmas escape, and the first weekend is particularly sought-after, dubbed 'Sunshine Saturday' for its high booking volume. However, this year's trends indicate a shift towards quieter destinations like Gozo and long-haul locations, with Gozo experiencing a remarkable 1,900% increase in searches and Sri Lanka climbing 44 places in the rankings. Despite this, traditional hotspots like Tenerife, Malta, Egypt, Dubai, and Fuerteventura remain popular. The travel agency body Abta notes that travelers are booking earlier than usual, with many securing holidays for summer 2026 and beyond. This trend is supported by the rise in bookings for the first weekend after Christmas, up 60% year-on-year, according to Dorset Cottage Holidays' marketing manager, Melissa Hawkins. However, some destinations are experiencing a decline in search interest, such as Menorca, Lake Como, and Sicily, suggesting that Britons are willing to travel further, with an average flight time increase of over 20 minutes. The travel industry urges consumers to take their time and compare options to ensure they find the perfect holiday, emphasizing that flexibility can lead to great deals throughout the year.
