A Burning Issue: Sapphire RX 9070 XT NITRO's Power Cable Woes
The recent report of yet another Sapphire Radeon RX 9070 XT NITRO owner experiencing burn marks on their GPU power cable has sparked concerns among users. This particular case stands out due to the severity of the burn marks, which are more pronounced than those seen in previous incidents.

The affected user, divinethreshold, shared their experience on Reddit, detailing a system that ran smoothly for almost a year before suddenly encountering random crashes to a black screen. Despite extensive troubleshooting efforts, including BIOS updates, a fresh Windows installation, and the removal of all peripherals, the crashes persisted.
"System running 100% for almost a year – and then suddenly random crashes to black screen. I updated the BIOS, reinstalled windows, installed only drivers and Steam, set all BIOS settings to stock, tried EXPO on and off. I disconnected every peripheral, every USB device, and even used a basic wired Dell keyboard and mouse. Still, the crashes continued," divinethreshold explained.
Upon disassembling the entire system, the cause became apparent: burn marks on the GPU cable. This incident adds to a growing list of similar reports, with three cases surfacing within the last two months alone.
While the number of affected cards remains in the single digits compared to the thousands likely in circulation, the trend is concerning. Sapphire has yet to issue a recall or acknowledge a widespread defect. In a previous interview, a Sapphire representative downplayed these reports, suggesting that PSU cables, adapters, or improper connections were to blame, rather than the card itself.
The use of a 12V 2×6 connector on Radeon 9000 series cards by only two AMD AIBs, ASRock and Sapphire, further raises questions. With most public burn reports centered on Sapphire's NITRO line, the potential impact on their future RDNA5 connector strategy is a topic of speculation.
And here's where it gets controversial: will Sapphire address these concerns or continue with their current design? The ball is in their court, and the decision could impact the trust and loyalty of their customer base.
