Hamilton's Collaboration with Resident Evil: A Timeless Watch for a Timeless Game
A legendary video game franchise and a renowned watchmaker collide! Hamilton, the iconic Swiss watch brand, has teamed up with Capcom's Resident Evil to bring a stunning timepiece to life. But here's the twist: they've revived a deep-cut tool watch from their archives, the Pan Europ, for this collaboration.
The Pan Europ, a cushion-cased racing watch, has been somewhat overlooked in recent years, but its rich history and retro charm are undeniable. While it may not boast the same prestige as its brand mates, the Murph, Khaki Field, and Intra-Matic, it holds its own unique appeal. And now, it's getting a well-deserved moment in the spotlight.
In the upcoming Resident Evil Requiem, releasing on February 27, the game's protagonist, Grace Ashcroft, sports a special edition Pan Europ. This watch is a reproduction of a limited-edition model from 2023, part of Hamilton's Black and Gold collection. Despite the collection's underwhelming performance, the Pan Europ stood out with its striking black and gilt color scheme, a classic combination that exudes elegance.
But here's where it gets interesting: Hamilton has enhanced the gold accents on this reissue. The gold, previously reserved for the rehaut and dial details, now extends to the 60-minute bezel track and the crown's gilded ring. This subtle yet impactful change adds a touch of luxury to the watch's already captivating design.
The Pan Europ's origins date back to 1971 when it debuted as one of the first watches to feature the groundbreaking Caliber 11 automatic chronograph movement. Its name and racing-inspired design paid homage to Hamilton's European roots, as the brand had recently relocated from America.
Fast forward to 2011, Hamilton reintroduced the Pan Europ in its original chronograph form, and in 2021, expanded the collection with a three-hand dial and day-date complication. The initial releases showcased sporty colorways, but the 2023 black-and-gilt redesign elevated the watch's sophistication. This modern interpretation highlights the oversized rehaut, chamfered baton hour markers, and the metallic black and golden indices, creating a visually striking timepiece.
Comparing the 2023 release to the Resident Evil edition, we notice subtle differences. The seconds hand is no longer golden, and the dial markings have been simplified, leaving only the Hamilton logo. The 42mm cushion case and knurled bezel, coated in black PVD, showcase contrasting brushed and polished surfaces. Inside, the Hamilton Caliber H-30 automatic movement boasts an impressive 80-hour power reserve, visible through an exhibition caseback.
The other half of the collaboration, the Khaki Field Auto Chrono, features a more prominent game-inspired design. Its dial sports a large wing decoration, while the crown and pushers resemble a sniper scope adjustment knob and bullet casings, respectively, tying into the character's combat background.
This robust chronograph is powered by the Caliber H-21 automatic movement, featuring a day-date complication, a Nivachron balance spring, and a 60-hour power reserve. Interestingly, the subdials include a 30-minute totalizer at 12:00 and a 12-hour totalizer at 6:00, but no seconds hand.
The Hamilton Resident Evil Requiem collaboration is set to launch alongside the game on February 26, with each watch limited to 2,000 units. The Pan Europ is priced at $1,475, a modest increase over the standard version, considering the PVD coating and elegant black leather strap. The Khaki Field Auto Chrono is priced at $2,175, matching the regular production model.
And this is the part most people miss: the collaboration not only brings a unique watch to the forefront but also highlights Hamilton's ability to blend functionality and style. It's a testament to the brand's versatility and its commitment to creating timepieces that resonate with diverse audiences, from gamers to watch enthusiasts.
