SPRINGFIELD — Missouri State’s women’s basketball team experienced another setback, falling to Gonzaga with a final score of 68-49 at Great Southern Bank Arena on Friday night. This loss marked their third consecutive defeat, leaving fans wondering if the team can regain its spark.
The game started sluggishly for the Lady Bears, echoing their previous outings. Despite a promising start where Missouri State managed to tie the score twice early on, Gonzaga took control midway through the first quarter. The Bulldogs seized an 8:05-minute three-pointer to claim the lead and never relinquished it. Defensively, Gonzaga stifled the Lady Bears, limiting them to shooting only 2-for-12 from the field in the first period, which set the tone for the game.
Offensively, Missouri State found it hard to establish rhythm, especially in the second quarter. Yet, the team showed resilience, remaining within striking distance. A late basket by Kaemyn Bekemeier just before halftime narrowed the gap to 11 points, giving them a 29-18 deficit at the break.
In the third frame, the Lady Bears turned up their offensive effort, shooting an impressive 7-for-15 (around 46.7%) and perfect from the free-throw line, scoring 19 points and trimming Gonzaga’s lead to just eight. However, the Bulldogs responded with their best offensive period of the night. They extended their advantage to 15 points, 52-37, heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter didn’t bring any surprises; Gonzaga continued to dominate. They pushed their lead to as much as 21 points with over six minutes remaining, and even in the final moments, their advantage remained significant. This result was especially disheartening as Missouri State not only lost at home but also posted its lowest scoring total of the season.
Individually, the Lady Bears had two standout performers. Cady Pauley scored 13 points, and Bekemeier added 12, with Bekemeier also leading in rebounds with seven. Freshman Maiesha Washington contributed with a team-high three assists. A consistent bright spot for Missouri State this season has been their free-throw shooting. They successfully made 15 of 17 attempts (about 88.2%), a stark contrast to Gonzaga’s nine attempts—highlighting their effectiveness at the line.
Defensively, the Lady Bears forced 22 turnovers, converting those into 18 points. Yet, Gonzaga had the upper hand in rebounding (41-24), interior scoring (28-18), and three-point shooting (8-2), which clearly favored the Bulldogs.
Looking ahead, Missouri State will wrap up their four-game home stretch on Monday, December 22, when they welcome Central Arkansas. The game will kick off at 1:00 p.m. and be available for streaming on ESPN+.
