Ready for a frightfully fun time? The hit roguelite sensation, Megabonk, a 3D twist on the beloved Vampire Survivors, is getting a spooky makeover just in time for the holidays! While a Halloween update might seem a bit late, think about it – Christmas has always had a touch of the macabre, right? A Christmas Carol, Krampus… it all fits!
Solo developer Vedinad, announced on Steam that the update is finally ready. Initially planned as a small Halloween addition, it blossomed into something more substantial, requiring extra work. Here’s what the Spooky Update brings to the table:
- New Map
- New Character
- New Weapon
- New Items
- New Enemies and Bosses
- New Achievements and Challenges
Megabonk is a clear homage to Poncle’s Vampire Survivors, but with its own unique flair, most notably its third-person, 3D action gameplay. Launched in September, the game quickly gained massive popularity – and deservedly so! It's a fantastic game, even if it borrows heavily from existing ideas. But here's where it gets controversial: Megabonk arrived a couple of months before Poncle revealed their own 3D reimagining of Vampire Survivors, which is also incorporating deck-building roguelite elements.
Beyond the new content, the Spooky Update also includes bug fixes, some advanced settings for fine-tuning, and balancing adjustments. Players can now access the game's console, opening up possibilities for speedrunning. Even this update has already received a follow-up to address a few minor issues.
Megabonk is definitely worth checking out. It has already attracted a large following, even earning a nomination in the Best Debut Indie Game category at The Game Awards this year. The developer, however, withdrew the game from consideration because it wasn't technically his first game. And this is the part most people miss: the eventual winners of the category didn’t do the same.
What do you think about the timing of the update? Do you think the game's popularity is justified? Share your thoughts in the comments!
