Hold onto your martinis, shaken, not stirred! Netflix is about to become a temporary home for some of the most iconic James Bond films. This is a bit of a surprise, considering the James Bond library is owned by Amazon MGM, a direct streaming competitor. But here's the exciting scoop: starting January 15th, Netflix subscribers in the U.S., German-speaking countries, France, Latin America, and several other territories can dive into the world of 007.
You'll be able to stream the most recent Bond film, No Time to Die, along with Die Another Day, Quantum of Solace, and Skyfall. This Bond bonanza will last for a three-month period.
But that's not all! Other Amazon-owned titles, including some of the Rocky and Creed movies, and the Legally Blonde films, will also be available. Plus, Amazon's original series Hunters is already on Netflix in the U.S. and other regions, and Man in the High Castle and other series will be joining the lineup.
Chris Ottinger, Head of Worldwide Distribution at Amazon MGM Studios, explained that this move is part of a broader strategy. Amazon plans to continue licensing MGM's extensive library to various streaming and television partners globally. He emphasized the enduring popularity of James Bond and the strong relationship they've built with Netflix.
And this is the part most people miss... The Bond films typically grace Prime Video for about two months each year, usually around Bond Day in October. They also appear on MGM+ from October through December. This Netflix deal is a clever way to keep the franchise top-of-mind while we eagerly await the 26th James Bond movie, which will be directed by Denis Villeneuve. The release date is still a ways off, potentially as late as 2028.
What do you think about this temporary streaming arrangement? Do you think it's a smart move for both companies, or does it dilute the exclusivity of the Bond films? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
