A shocking plea for leniency has been made by none other than Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of the infamous Theranos. In a bold move, she has petitioned former President Donald Trump to commute her prison sentence, which was handed down after her conviction for defrauding investors in her once-booming blood-testing startup.
The request, as listed on the US Department of Justice website, is currently pending, leaving many to wonder about its outcome. The White House, however, has remained tight-lipped, offering no immediate response to inquiries.
Holmes, a mere 37 years old, found herself in hot water after the collapse of Theranos, a blood-testing company she founded. Her conviction on four counts of investor fraud led to an 11-year prison sentence in November 2022.
What's intriguing is that Holmes, a university dropout with no medical background, managed to dupe some of the world's wealthiest and most influential individuals, including media mogul Rupert Murdoch and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. She convinced them that her company had developed a revolutionary technology capable of testing for various health conditions with just a tiny drop of blood.
She even filed a patent for this technology, which aimed to perform an extensive range of tests on minimal blood samples, a groundbreaking development that would have revolutionized diagnostics.
But here's where it gets controversial: the downfall of Theranos began with an exposé by Wall Street Journal reporter John Carreyrou in 2015. Carreyrou revealed that Theranos' much-lauded technology wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Over the following months, he exposed the truth behind Holmes' claims, showing that the testing devices she touted as capable of performing a variety of medical tests with a single drop of blood were, in fact, not being used for most analyses.
As regulators began to scrutinize Theranos, the company started retracting its tests and recalling its machines. Holmes stepped down as CEO in 2018, and the company soon dissolved. That same year, the US government charged Holmes and her co-executive Sunny Balwani with defrauding investors and patients and making false claims about the company's technology.
Trump's track record on clemency is an interesting one. Since the beginning of his second term, he has granted clemency to over 1,600 individuals, most of whom were involved in the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. In contrast, during his first term, he issued a mere 237 pardons and commutations.
